Longines has an important role in making chronographe for aviation since the early 20th century. The Charles Lindbergh or WWII pilot watches; or from the first monopusher to the first flyback; these are all significant achievements by Longines. The Avigation BigEye has been modelled after an early-1970s watch made for military aviators. The oversized minute counter, explaining its name “BigEye”. Made in stainless steel, at 41mm. Movement is the Longines Calibre L688 which is based on the 7750 with heavy modifications. Automatic winding with column wheel, power reserve at 54hours. In 2008, Omega made the Speedmaster Moonwatch Alaska Project : a “re-issue” Speedmaster from the past. The original Omega Speedmaster Alaska Project was from 1969/1970, later there was the Speedmaster Alaska Project II watch. The 2008 re-issue piece is a combination from both the original and the second gen. An important note is that the original Alaska Project watches were produced as five prototype watches at the request of NASA who wanted a design to incorporate heat reflective design. NASA was also had planned a mission to the dark side of the moon (but it didn’t happen) where temperatures are much colder
