Ikepod started in 1993-1994, when Oliver Ike, Swiss businessman who was in the furniture industry, hired Marc Newson to design wrist watches for a new project. Newson’s first watch design was called the “Pod,” he was 23 years old in 1986. Newson assembled 100 pieces of the Pod watch and this experience taught him just how difficult watch design, production, and construction was. The name Ikepod came from Newson’s design obsession with “pod” and “capsule” style that define most of his work. The first Ikepod watch was called the Sea Slug, intentionally named for the exotic ocean creature. It was meant to set a tone that the brand was cool and different. I believe that it was priced under $1,000 when it was first launched.

The watch dimension is almost identical to the original piece from 1969.  One of the most recognisable chronograph, heavily tied to automotive theme.  Legendary actor Steve McQueen used the Monaco in the movie LeMans.

• The starry dial— flanked by an elegant swirl of 62 brilliant-cut diamonds — transforms the entire timepiece here, which is by now already well known for its distinctive asymmetrical lugs that extend into a sweeping curve around the face. The design — which has history dating back to the 1970s — is complemented by an equally noteworthy movement: the self winding 501P1 manufacture movement. This updated movement beats at 4Hz instead of the previous 530P’s 3Hz, lending greater beat stability whilst keeping power reserve at a solid 40 hours. An intricate Milanese mesh strap, which takes at least eight artisans over 100 hours to create — keeps things classy and wearable for any occasion.
